Title:
Strategic Outreach: Translating the Impact of Individual Counseling to the Campus Community
Presenters:
Gary Glass, PhD
Abstract:
This session will introduce how a strategic approach to outreach can better serve students and highlight the counseling center as an essential campus resource. A framework will be introduced that allows for a cohesive and efficient outreach strategy that translates clinical expertise to community-level interventions. As wellness centers offer programming that, increasingly, introduces questions about the necessity of counseling center outreach, this session will introduce an approach that relies on the clinical expertise that makes outreach essential. In doing so, it also highlights the value of the counseling center on your campus. The materials and activities introduced in this session are informed by evidence-based interventions such as ACT, DBT, and CBT, with nuance that attends to the cultural and economic diversity of our student populations. We will also review tools and activities that borrow from other perspectives on your campus that can play a role in achieving your outreach goals. The presentation with review strategies on identifying campus partners, forming strategic "outreach messages", and build an Outreach platform for your center that addresses the issues in campus culture and society that relate to the common issues students bring to counseling session.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will summarize a strategic approach to Outreach that articulates a specific need for counseling center outreach in campus mental health/well-being programming.
2. Be able to identify campus partners and potential initiatives in delivering your messages (faculty, students, staff, etc.) in implementing strategic community-level intervention.
3. Participants will be able to articulate key outreach messages and themes conducive to cohesive community-level interventions
